Imagine a world where men and women are equal. They receive equal pay for equal work. They are treated equally in the workplace. They are seen as equals in every aspect of society. They are viewed in the same way. Why does this world not exist? Why has gender equality not yet been achieved? Gender equality is the basic belief that men and women are equal and should have equal rights. Some blame the inequality on religion, citing misinterpretation of doctrine as an excuse to keep women inferior to men. Some blame social norms, stating that “women haven’t been discriminated against, they just haven’t been qualified” (curt-rice.com). Current gender equality movements, such as the feminist movement, are working to achieve equality for women in areas of life such as the job market and other areas of society. Despite awareness and increased actions to achieve equality, gender equality has not been achieved because of religious misinterpretations, social roles, and stereotypical gender roles.
